Bangladesh Repatriates 186 Nationals From Iran as Middle East Conflict Intensifies

Bangladesh has repatriated 186 expatriates from Iran on a chartered flight amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed told Parliament on Monday.

The operation was carried out with assistance from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Her remarks came in response to concerns raised by Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Quasem Arman, who questioned the government’s preparedness and support for Bangladeshis caught in the conflict zone.

Shama Obaed said the government has placed the highest priority on ensuring the safety of Bangladeshi expatriates since the Iran war began. Diplomatic missions across the region are working “24/7” to monitor the situation and assist citizens in distress.

Despite these efforts, she acknowledged that five expatriates have died in the conflict. The government has managed to repatriate the bodies of two victims, despite significant logistical and security challenges.

The state minister highlighted the complexity of the situation, noting that many expatriates “do not even know when and where they are getting caught in the crossfires,” making protection efforts extremely difficult.

Even so, she said, the government has successfully brought home 186 Bangladeshis from war‑hit Iran a significant achievement given the volatile conditions.
