Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced on Saturday that Bangladesh will conduct an investigation into the journalism of the past 15 years, during the Awami League’s rule, under the supervision of the United Nations. He made the statement during the review event of the Media Reform Commission report, organized by the Broadcast Journalist Center at the Daily Star Bhaban in Dhaka.

Shafiqul emphasized the importance of ensuring a minimum salary of Tk30,000 for journalists working in electronic media. He highlighted that during the last 15 years, the country experienced three controversial elections, along with numerous cases of disappearances and murders.

He noted that the BNP frequently claims that the previous government filed six million cases against their leaders and activists and questioned the truthfulness of journalism regarding these issues. “How much truthful journalism have we done about these? That discussion should be held now,” he said.

The press secretary stated, “We are sending a letter to the United Nations requesting an outside investigation of the journalism during the last 15 years. We want UN experts to examine and report on the nature of journalism here.”

Shafiqul expressed hope that such an investigation would build trust in Bangladeshi journalism and allow the country to start its journey anew.

He also pointed out that a journalist’s political ideology does not necessarily determine their professionalism, but stressed the importance of avoiding disinformation. He added that journalists in Bangladesh faced harassment by the previous government.
