Bangladesh Ladies Club Australia Celebrates International Women’s Day in Sydney with Colourful Festivities

The Bangladesh Ladies Club Australia marked International Women’s Day 2026 in Sydney with a vibrant and dignified celebration, highlighting this year’s theme: “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls.” Organisers emphasised that the theme is not just a slogan, but a call for accountability, implementation and measurable progress.

The event began with the national anthems of Bangladesh and Australia, conducted by Dr Fahima Sattar.
In her welcome address, Club President Rahela Arefin said women are no longer behind in society they are advancing in every field. She thanked all supporters and contributors who helped make the event possible.

General Secretary and Councillor Shirin Akhter urged that Women’s Day should not be limited to a single day of celebration. Instead, she called for continuous advocacy to ensure women’s rightful place and equal opportunities.

Event coordinator Dr Shaila Islam highlighted the importance of such initiatives in promoting women’s rights. A minute of silence was observed in memory of late club member Laila Haque.

The chief guest was Sophie Cotsis MP, New South Wales Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Work, Health and Safety. She praised the Bangladeshi community’s efforts in empowering women and assured continued support from the NSW government.

Poet Lutfunnesa recited a poem dedicated to women’s empowerment, adding a cultural touch to the evening.

A seminar on women’s health followed, featuring speakers Dr Rokeya Fakir Keya, Dr Ishrat Hafiz Beli and Dr Shama Parvin. They answered questions from attendees and provided essential health guidance.

Bangladesh Ladies Club Australia has long been active in promoting women’s empowerment, health awareness and community development. The event concluded with a Women’s Day cake‑cutting ceremony and a delightful dinner for all guests.

The celebration showcased unity, pride and the ongoing commitment to uplifting women within the Bangladeshi community in Australia.
