Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day 2026 was celebrated in Milan with dignity, festivity and deep respect, as the Consulate General of Bangladesh hosted a full day of commemorative events on 26 March.
The day began at the consulate premises with the hoisting of the national flag to the tune of the national anthem. A one‑minute silence was observed in honour of the martyrs of the Liberation War. Officials then read out the messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister. A special documentary produced by the DFP was screened, highlighting the history of independence and the spirit of the Liberation War.
During the discussion session, Consul General Mohammad Rafiqul Alam emphasised the importance of educating the second generation about the true history of Bangladesh’s independence.
In the evening, a grand diplomatic reception was held at Milan’s historic Palazzo Isimbardi. Special guest Francesco Vassallo, Deputy Mayor of Milan, attended the event along with members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Lombardy regional government and leaders of the Bangladeshi community. More than 150 guests were present.
In his remarks, the Consul General described Italy as one of Bangladesh’s most important development partners and expressed gratitude for the support extended to Bangladeshi expatriates. Deputy Mayor Vassallo praised the Bangladeshi community for its hard work, discipline and contribution to the local economy.
Guests were treated to a lavish spread of 24 traditional Bangladeshi dishes, including pitha and desserts a highlight that particularly impressed the foreign attendees.
Through these day‑long celebrations, Bangladesh’s culture, history and the proud spirit of independence were showcased with honour on Italian soil.
