To bolster the country’s food security, the interim government has been importing rice from various nations. Recently, a total of 61,000 tons of rice was imported within three days.
Two ships carrying 35,000 tons of rice from India and Vietnam have arrived at the Port of Chittagong, as announced by the Ministry of Food on Monday.
According to the ministry’s statement, 22,500 metric tons of parboiled rice were purchased from India through an open tender, while 12,500 tons of atap rice were acquired from Vietnam under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement. This shipment from Vietnam is the second; the first shipment of 17,800 metric tons had already reached the country.
The government’s initiative has led to the regular arrival of rice shipments from various countries, contributing positively to the nation’s food security.
According to the Ministry of Food, a total of 622,000 tons of rice have been imported—340,000 tons by the government and 282,000 tons by private importers—during the current fiscal year.
Additionally, 26,000 tons of rice from Pakistan has recently arrived at the Port of Chittagong, which is part of this three-day import. This influx of rice is expected to further improve the food supply situation in the country and help stabilize market prices.
Such initiatives by the government are essential for ensuring food security, particularly in the current global context.
