The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has recorded the country’s highest temperature of 37 degrees Celsius in the Rajshahi division on Wednesday, as over 49 districts grapple with mild to moderate heatwave conditions. Residents of Nilphamari in the Rangpur division faced a moderate heatwave, while other districts experienced milder temperatures.
A broad heatwave also affected several divisions including Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, and Sylhet, along with districts such as Brahmanbaria and Feni. Meteorologist Omar Faruq from the BMD stated that these high temperatures are expected to continue for another two to three days. He added that the heat feels more intense due to high humidity levels, and the light rainfall forecast has provided little relief so far.
Faruq predicts that the situation will improve around June 15 or 16, when heavier rainfall is expected to arrive. Meanwhile, residents of Dhaka, where temperatures reached 35.6 degrees Celsius, largely stayed indoors during the daytime to avoid the heat.
Health experts have urged people to take precautions by avoiding direct sunlight and using protective gear such as sunglasses, umbrellas, and caps when venturing outside during the heatwave
