Bangladesh Environment Adviser Views Recent Political Meeting as a Positive Sign

2 min read

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Bangladesh’s Interim Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Water Resources Adviser, described the recent meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London as a reassuring development. Speaking on Sunday, she highlighted that the political atmosphere appears to be moving in a constructive direction following the 90-minute discussion.

Addressing reporters at the Secretariat after the Eid holidays, Rizwana said that political parties are now likely to express their views from their respective positions, and any discussions would be relayed through the Chief Adviser.

When questioned about tensions between the government and BNP over election issues, she responded, “I don’t think there was any such tension to begin with. Whether it’s politics, elections, democracy, or reforms progress must be made through dialogue. I see this ongoing dialogue as a positive step.”

Following their meeting in London, the Chief Adviser and BNP Acting Chairman agreed to hold the next national election in the week before Ramadan 2026, provided all preparations are completed on time. Their joint statement indicated that the talks had helped ease political deadlock and strained relations between the interim government and the country’s largest political party, signaling a potential thaw in long-standing tensions.
