Bangladesh defeated West Indies by 74 runs in the 1st ODI

Bangladesh, batting first on a tricky Mirpur wicket, were bowled out for 207 in 49.4 overs. Despite the modest total, the Tigers relied on their spinners to script a throwback-style victory reminiscent of their old ODI formula defend par scores with relentless spin.

The innings began poorly for the hosts, slipping to 8 for 2 in just 2.1 overs as openers Saif Hasan (3) and Soumya Sarkar (4) fell cheaply to Romario Shepherd and Jayden Seales. Najmul Hossain Shanto (32 off 63) and Towhid Hridoy (51 off 90) steadied the innings with a 71-run stand. Debutant Mahidul Islam Ankon impressed with a composed 46, while captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 17. Late fireworks came from Rishad Hossain, who smashed 26 off 13 balls, including two sixes, to push Bangladesh past 200.

For West Indies, Jayden Seales (3/48) was the pick of the bowlers, while Roston Chase (2/37) and Justin Greaves (2/43) provided crucial breakthroughs. Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre bowled a miserly spell of 1 for 19 from 10 overs, one of the most economical by a visiting spinner in Bangladesh.

Chasing 208, West Indies started brightly with Brandon King (44) and Alick Athanaze (27) adding 51 for the opening wicket. But once leg-spinner Rishad Hossain entered the attack, the game turned dramatically. Rishad ripped through the top and middle order, finishing with 6 for 35 in 9 overs, the best-ever figures by a Bangladeshi spinner in ODIs, surpassing Taijul Islam’s 5 for 28 against the same opponents in 2022.

From 51 without loss, West Indies collapsed to 133 all out in 39 overs, losing their last nine wickets for just 82 runs. None of the middle-order batters could withstand Rishad’s variations, and the visitors folded tamely.

The win was crucial for Bangladesh, who had lost four consecutive ODI series coming into this contest. For captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, it was a much-needed result after nine defeats in his first 10 games as skipper. The victory also marked the return of ODI cricket to Mirpur after nearly two years, with the pitch once again proving to be a spinner’s paradise.

Bangladesh now lead the series 1-0, with the second ODI scheduled for October 21 at the same venue.
