The Bangladeshi government has officially declared 5 August as a nationwide public holiday to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives during the July uprising that led to the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government last year.

The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification on Wednesday, formally designating the day as July Uprising Day. From now on, the entire country will observe 5 August annually with appropriate ceremonies and remembrance events.

Earlier, the government announced 5 August as July Uprising Day and 8 August as New Bangladesh Day. The latter marks the day when an interim government was formed following the mass uprising by students and citizens that toppled the previous administration.

Additionally, the government declared 16 July as Martyr Abu Sayeed Day in memory of the student killed by police during the mass movement in Rangpur. The day honors the sacrifice of those who fought for democracy and change in Bangladesh’s recent history.
