In Bangladesh, rivers, canals, and seas are integral to life, with fishing representing not just a livelihood but a culture and way of life. To promote fish breeding, enhance production, conserve marine resources, and ensure sustainable fishing practices, the government has imposed a ban on all types of fishing in its marine waters from April 15 to June 11 for a duration of 58 days.
This decision was announced in a press release signed by HM Khalid Iftekhar, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, on March 19. The ministry issued a notification under the directive of the President.
The ban is enforced under Sub-rule (1) of Clause (a) of Rule 3 of the Marine Fisheries Regulations, 2023. Its goal is to encourage proper breeding and production of fish in Bangladesh’s marine waters while taking effective measures for the conservation of marine fish resources and sustainable fishing.
Through this initiative, the government hopes to enhance the country’s fish resources, enabling sustainable fishing practices in the future. It also presents an opportunity for fish farmers to focus on increasing fish breeding and production.
Fishing is a traditional industry in Bangladesh, and the government’s recent action opens a new horizon for sustainable fisheries management.
