Sydney’s Bangladeshi community gathered in vibrant numbers as the Bangladesh Awami League Australia chapter celebrated the 106th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangladesh’s Independence Day with a colourful doa and discussion event. The programme, held on 26 March at the Grameen Restaurant hall, drew a remarkable turnout from expatriates across the city.
The event was presided over by respected community figure Dr Kaiyum Parvez, former lecturer at Western Sydney University, writer and columnist. Maksudur Rahman Suman Chowdhury conducted the programme. The ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by tributes to the martyrs and freedom fighters of the Liberation War. A cake was cut in honour of Bangabandhu’s birthday, with the hall echoing to the spirited chants of “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” Dr Parvez also led the doa and prayers.
Leaders from various affiliated organisations delivered speeches reflecting on Bangabandhu’s legacy and the significance of independence. Speakers included Dr Kaiyum Parvez, Gias Uddin Molla, acting general secretary of Awami League Australia, Kobita Parvez, daughter of M.R. Akhtar Mukul, and freedom fighters Enayetur Rahim Belal, Shahadat Hossain, and Habibur Rahman Habib.
Leaders from Bangabandhu Parishad Australia Dr Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Dr Nur Rahman Khokon, Dr Lovely Rahman, and agriculturist Abdul Jalil were also present, along with many community members such as Iftekhar Uddin Iftu, Anisur Rahman Ritu, Apu Sarwar, Pol C Madhu, Moiduzzaman Sujon, Shahjahan Boitalik, Nandan Barua, Tasnim Uddin Fahim, and others.
Emotional recitations recalling the Liberation War were performed by Dr Kaiyum Parvez, Kobita Parvez, Iftekhar Uddin Iftu, Anisur Rahman Ritu, Shahjahan Boitalik, and Nandan Barua, moving the audience with memories of sacrifice and patriotism.
The event was attended by numerous community members, including Selima Begum, Purabi Parmita Bose, Shah Alam, Rezaul Hasan Bhutto, Fahmida Khondokar, Saiful Islam Talukder, Kamrul Islam, Apurbo Barua, Sabya Sachi, Shahriar Momen, and many others.
In closing, Dr Kaiyum Parvez thanked all attendees for their participation and announced the conclusion of the programme with a communal dinner.
