Afghanistan’s cricket sensation, Azmatullah Omarzai, has been honored with the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year 2024 award, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. At just 24 years old, Omarzai has elevated his team through his dynamic right-arm pace bowling and versatile batting skills.

Building on a stellar 2023, Omarzai emerged as one of the top performers in One-Day Internationals last year. While he also showcased his talent in T20Is and franchise cricket, it was in ODIs where he truly made his mark.

He ended the year as Afghanistan’s second-highest run scorer, trailing only Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker behind AM Ghazanfar. His contributions were pivotal in leading Afghanistan to victory in four out of five ODI series throughout 2024.

Although individual brilliance did not secure a series win in Sri Lanka early in the year, Omarzai played a crucial role in guiding Afghanistan to consecutive series triumphs against Ireland, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe. With an impressive batting average of 52.12 and a wicket-taking average of 20.47, Omarzai’s all-around performance solidifies his status as a key player on the international stage.
