CNG-powered autorickshaw drivers blocked both sides of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Banani on Sunday noon to protest the route plans for their vehicles. The drivers also besieged the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority headquarters, declaring they would not permit any staff to leave until their demands were addressed.
One of the protest organizers told reporters that in 2016, the previous government brought 26 unions in Dhaka district into the city, which reduced the driving space for CNG autorickshaws registered in the district. The drivers are now demanding that authorities allow 2,000 to 3,000 of these vehicles to operate within the city to ease their difficulties.
They accused the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority of repeatedly giving false promises and failing to fulfill their demands, adding pressure to resolve the issue promptly.
