Australia Win Khawaja’s Farewell Test by 5 Wickets, Seal Series 4-1 in Sydney

Fifteen years after making his international debut at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Usman Khawaja played his final Test at the very same venue. Although he could not produce a big score with the bat, his farewell match delivered plenty of drama. On the final day of the Ashes, Australia clinched a 5‑wicket victory, wrapping up the series 4-1.

Series Decided Early, but Sydney Test Had Special Significance
The fate of the Ashes had already been sealed earlier. Australia won the first three Tests to secure the series, while England’s victory in Melbourne only helped them avoid a whitewash.
However, the Sydney Test carried special emotional weight because it marked Khawaja’s final appearance in the Baggy Green.

There was also curiosity about whether the match would reach the fifth day. The previous four Tests had finished within just 13 days of play, drawing criticism over pitch quality and financial losses for Cricket Australia. With this match extending to Day 5, some of that pressure eased.

England Collapse, Set Australia a Modest Target
By the end of Day 4, England were already staring at defeat. With only two wickets in hand and a lead of just 119 runs, their chances were slim.
Although centurion Jacob Bethell was still at the crease, England eventually managed to set Australia a target of 160 runs.

Australia Stumble After Strong Start
Australia began confidently, thanks to a 62‑run opening stand between Travis Head and Jake Weatherald.
But the match tightened again when Australia lost five wickets for 59 runs, injecting fresh excitement into Khawaja’s farewell Test.

Despite the wobble, the hosts held their nerve to complete the chase and finish the series in dominant fashion.
