Australia Rules Out Repatriating Citizens from Syrian Camp Holding Families of Suspected Daesh Members

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday that his government will not repatriate Australian nationals living in a Syrian camp that houses families of suspected Daesh militants.

“We have a very firm view that we won’t be providing assistance or repatriation,” Albanese told the media.

The statement comes after 34 Australians who were briefly released on Monday from a camp in northern Syria were returned to the detention facility due to “technical reasons,” two sources told Reuters.

The government has faced ongoing pressure from rights groups and humanitarian organisations to bring home women and children stranded in the camps, but Canberra has maintained a strict security‑first approach.
