A wave of public support for Palestine swept across Australia as tens of thousands of citizens rallied in cities nationwide, demanding an end to violence in Gaza and backing the recognition of a Palestinian state. The demonstrations followed a recent political shift by the Australian government that has stirred international debate and domestic mobilization.
Protesters flooded the streets of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and more than 40 other locations, waving Palestinian flags and chanting “Free, Free Palestine.” Organizers claimed that around 350,000 people participated across the country, including an estimated 50,000 in Brisbane. However, local police reported a turnout closer to 10,000 in that city. Authorities in Sydney and Melbourne have not released official figures.
The rallies came in response to the government’s announcement on August 11 to conditionally recognize Palestine as a state. This move aligned Australia with countries like France, Britain and Canada, which have taken similar steps. The decision triggered a diplomatic rift with Israel, whose prime minister launched personal attacks against his Australian counterpart, escalating tensions between the two nations.
