Australia Post Boosts Weekend Deliveries for Christmas Surge

2 min read

In anticipation of the holiday rush, Australia Post has reintroduced weekend deliveries, ensuring that parcels reach their destinations in time for Christmas. With just a week remaining before the cut-off, deliveries are now available on Saturdays and Sundays across major cities and select regional areas.

To guarantee pre-Christmas arrival, standard parcels should be dispatched by Friday, December 20, while express shipments have until December 23. Those sending packages to or from Western Australia, the Northern Territory, or non-metro areas are advised to allow for additional time.

Gary Starr, Executive General Manager of Parcel, Post and eCommerce Services, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “With the holiday season just around the corner, we’re committed to ensuring our customers receive their parcels on time,” he stated. “Weekend deliveries not only meet demand but also make holiday shopping more convenient.”

Australia Post has bolstered its workforce, hiring thousands to manage this peak season efficiently. Last year, nearly 100 million parcels were delivered, and this year is poised to surpass that, driven by early Christmas shopping and major sales events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Despite financial pressures, online shopping in Australia remains robust. The June quarter saw a 4.4% rise in online purchases compared to last year, with fashion, health, and beauty items topping the list. Over 5.7 million households shopped online monthly, with Tasmanians, Northern Territorians, and Queenslanders leading the charge. However, the average number of items per transaction has slightly decreased by 2.6% year-on-year.
