Australia Poised to Recognize Palestine, Prime Minister Albanese Signals Change

1 min read

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is laying the groundwork for a historic shift in Australia’s foreign policy by moving toward recognizing a Palestinian state. While the timing and approach remain to be finalized, Albanese has privately indicated to Labor colleagues that such a declaration will come only at an appropriate moment, aimed at promoting a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“My entire political life, I’ve said I support two states Israel’s right to exist within secure borders and Palestinians’ legitimate aspiration for their own state. That’s my objective,” Albanese stated, emphasizing his commitment to a two-state solution.

Support for Palestinian statehood is gaining momentum among leading democracies. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced this week that the UK intends to recognize Palestine by September unless Israel takes significant steps to end the crisis in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire, and commit to a sustainable peace process. If both countries follow through, they would become the first G7 and UN Security Council members to recognize Palestine.
