Australia Fall Short in Final Minute as New Zealand Snatch Sevens Title

1 min read

Australia’s women came heartbreakingly close to winning the World Rugby Sevens Series event in the United States, falling to New Zealand in the dying moments of a dramatic final. Both teams entered the decider unbeaten after flawless pool stages and strong semifinal performances including Australia’s 22-14 win over Fiji.

The Aussies looked in complete control early, with Maddison Levi scoring first and Teagan Levi adding a brilliant double to give Australia a commanding 21-5 halftime lead, despite conceding an early try to Kelsey Teneti.

But the script flipped in the second half. New Zealand who have now reached all six finals this season mounted a stunning comeback, crossing in the 10th, 12th and 14th minutes to steal a 22-21 victory. The Black Ferns have now won five of the six finals against Australia this season.

New Zealand had already secured the overall series title after reaching the semifinals, but they were determined to close out the regular season with another win and did so in remarkable fashion.
