Australia powered past England in the second Ashes Test, leaving the visitors under immense pressure and the hosts on the brink of a series victory.
Statistics show that in the history of five-Test Ashes series, only once has a team lost after winning the first two matches England in 1936–37. Now, history threatens to repeat itself as England struggle again.
England’s Fourth-Day Fight
England resumed on Sunday at 134 for 6, needing another 43 runs to avoid an innings defeat. Captain Ben Stokes and Zak Willes adopted a more cautious approach, steering the team to 193 without further loss in the first session.
Stokes battled hard, scoring 50 runs off 148 balls, while Willes contributed 41 off 92 deliveries. Their partnership of 96 runs from 221 balls gave England brief hope.
However, at 224 team runs, Willes fell to a stunning one-handed catch by Steve Smith, breaking the stand and leaving England vulnerable once more.
With Australia dominant and England faltering, the series appears firmly in the hosts’ grasp.
