A tragic collision involving a pickup truck and an SUV in Ecuador has claimed the lives of at least nine people. Local reports indicate that among the victims are two children aged 6 and 11.
Martilo, a local official, suggested that the high number of fatalities points to the possibility that one of the vehicles was overloaded with passengers. Road accidents remain a leading cause of death in Ecuador.
Government statistics reveal that between January and May of 2025, the country experienced four thousand seven hundred fifty-six road accidents, resulting in 565 fatalities. Last year alone, approximately two thousand three hundred people lost their lives due to road crashes. More than one-third of these accidents were caused by inexperienced drivers or reckless speeding.
