A devastating fire at a popular discount store in Hermosillo, Sonora has left at least 23 people dead, including several children, and many more injured on Saturday. The tragedy struck as Mexico marked the Day of the Dead, a national holiday when families honor deceased loved ones.
Authorities said most of the victims likely died from toxic smoke inhalation. Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo announced a full and transparent investigation into the cause of the blaze, while State Attorney General Gustavo Salas confirmed the forensic findings.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the victims’ families and ordered federal assistance for rescue operations. The Sonora Red Cross deployed 40 workers and 10 ambulances, transporting the injured to hospitals in six separate rounds.
Although the fire has been brought under control, investigators are still probing its origin. Local media have reported that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze.
The disaster has cast a shadow over the Day of the Dead festivities, turning a day of remembrance into mourning for the city of Hermosillo and beyond.
