At least 20 killed in boat sinking in Afghanistan

At least 20 people have died after a boat capsized while crossing a river in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province. A provincial government official said on Saturday that women and children were among the dead.

A boat carrying women and children sank in the river in the Basaul area of ​​East Nangarhar’s Momand Dara district at around 7 am local time on Saturday, Nangarhar provincial information chief Quraishi Badlun said in a post on social media X.

Five people survived the incident. An investigation is underway to find out the cause of the accident. Authorities have sent a medical team and ambulance to the area, Nangarhar Province’s Department of Information and Culture said.

Provincial government officials said at least five bodies have been recovered from the boat capsizing and efforts are on to find the rest.

Residents of the area often use boats to cross the river in hostile conditions as there are no bridges nearby, local media said.
