At least 13 people have been killed after a passenger train derailed in southern Mexico, local authorities confirmed. The train, operated along the Interoceanic Corridor in the state of Oaxaca, was carrying around 250 people, including nine crew members, when it left the tracks.

According to the Mexican Navy, 98 passengers were injured, with 36 receiving medical treatment. President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X that five of the injured are in critical condition, and senior officials have been sent to support the families of those killed.

Where the Accident Happened

The derailment occurred between the towns of Chivela and Nizanda, on a key rail line connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Authorities said the train derailed while navigating a curve near Nizanda.

Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara said multiple government agencies had reached the crash site to assist rescue and medical teams.

About the Interoceanic Train

The Interoceanic Train was inaugurated in 2023 by then‑president Andrés Manuel López Obrador as part of a major infrastructure push to expand rail travel in southern Mexico. The project aims to boost economic development across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrow land bridge between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is expected to follow.
