Ariana Grande has acknowledged fans’ mixed reactions to her casting as Glinda Upland in the upcoming Wicked film adaptation, expressing understanding of the high expectations tied to the iconic role.
As a longtime admirer of the Broadway musical, Grande recognizes the challenge of meeting fans’ standards and the importance of earning her place in the role, especially given the intense audition process for director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation.
In a recent interview, Grande reflected on the pressure to reshape public perception and prove her capabilities. “This is something I loved about auditioning for Wicked,” she said. “Anything on this scale has to be earned. It’s fun to have the challenge of reframing people’s perceptions and doing the work to earn my place.”
Grande, with roots in musical theater since childhood, admitted to feeling the initial apprehension from fans regarding her casting, acknowledging that many may not realize the extensive training she’s undergone for the role. With humor and empathy, she added, “As a fan, if I’d only known 7 Rings, I probably would have had the same reaction.”
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba alongside Grande’s Glinda, brings Wicked’s beloved tale of friendship and rivalry to the big screen. The first installment of the adaptation premieres on November 22, 2024, with part two scheduled for November 21, 2025.
