Argentina Schedules US Friendlies Against Venezuela and Puerto Rico Ahead of World Cup

2 min read

With only one fixture remaining in the South American World Cup qualifying campaign, reigning champions Argentina have confirmed two international friendlies in the United States this October as part of their final preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The matches will see Lionel Scaloni’s side face Venezuela and Puerto Rico during the October FIFA window.

Argentina’s last competitive outing before these friendlies will be against Ecuador on 10 September. With no further official fixtures scheduled until the tournament, the Argentine Football Association has opted to use the break for targeted preparation. On 10 October, the Albiceleste will meet Venezuela at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, a repeat of their recent qualifier in which Argentina secured a 3-0 victory, with Lionel Messi scoring twice.

Three days later, on 13 October, Argentina will take on Puerto Rico at Soldier Field in Chicago. Currently ranked 157th in the FIFA standings, Puerto Rico presents a different type of challenge for the world champions. The selection of these opponents follows the cancellation of a planned tour to China and the collapse of a proposed match against Mexico due to contractual complications.

These fixtures are expected to serve as both tactical rehearsals and opportunities for squad rotation, allowing Scaloni to fine-tune his team in one of the host nations of the 2026 World Cup, ensuring readiness for their title defence.
