Angelina Jolie has discovered a profound bond with legendary opera singer Maria Callas as she brings the icon’s story to life in the upcoming biopic Maria. Speaking at the American Film Institute Festival in Hollywood, Jolie revealed to People magazine that portraying Callas has stirred personal reflections on loneliness and dedication.
“I share a certain loneliness with Callas that comes from being a dedicated worker,” Jolie, 49, shared, drawing parallels between her own life and Callas’. “I may be many things, but I’m a very hard worker, right?” she added, emphasizing the commitment that both women share in their crafts.
Directed by Pablo Larraín, known for Jackie and Spencer, Maria chronicles Callas’ later years, focusing on her retreat to Paris after a life marked by both grandeur and solitude in the public eye. Callas, who passed away in Paris at 53, remains an enduring figure in opera, and Jolie noted how deeply the role resonated with her: “I don’t want to speak too much about it because it’s too personal, but there’s definitely a loneliness and a work ethic.”
The film garnered a standing ovation at its New York Film Festival premiere in September, building excitement ahead of its release. At the AFI Festival, Jolie expressed her gratitude to the audience, saying, “I’m so happy to be here tonight…to share this stage with these talented, wonderful people and my dear friends.” She added, “I hope you see in this film how much we care for the people whose lives we’re sharing with you and how much they also loved art.”
