Alex Robertson Clears the Air: “My Commitment to the Socceroos Was Never in Doubt”

1 min read

In Alex Robertson’s mind, there was never any uncertainty about where his international future lay even if the rest of the football world thought otherwise.

The highly rated 22‑year‑old midfielder made his Socceroos debut in 2023 under Graham Arnold and appeared firmly set for a long career in green and gold. But confusion erupted last year when then‑coach Tony Popovic stated Robertson was ineligible due to a paperwork issue and had made himself unavailable.

Because his two caps came in friendlies, Robertson technically remained eligible for England, Peru and Scotland, fuelling speculation that he might switch allegiances.

The situation was resolved late last year when the Manchester City Academy product was recalled to the national squad after a two‑year absence. Now, as Australia prepares to face Cameroon and Curaçao in their final home fixtures before the World Cup, Robertson has spoken publicly to put the matter to rest.

He insists his loyalty to Australia never wavered and that the confusion was external, not internal. With his return to the squad, the midfielder is focused on cementing his place ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
