Akash Deep Shines as India Near Series-levelling Win in Edgbaston Test

1 min read

India’s pace bowler Akash Deep delivered an impressive spell before Washington Sundar dismissed England captain Ben Stokes on the stroke of lunch, keeping India on the brink of a remarkable series-levelling victory in the second Test at Edgbaston.

Set an imposing 608-run target to win, England were 153-6 at the lunch break on a rain-affected fifth day, still needing 455 runs to secure an unlikely win.

Deep, only playing in Birmingham after India rested star fast Jasprit Bumrah, made an early impact by dismissing Ollie Pope and Harry Brook in a spell of 2-22 from six overs, raising hopes for the visitors.

He now has a total of eight wickets in the match, evenly split across both innings, and looked poised to help India secure a crucial victory. Just as England’s middle order, led by Stokes and Jamie Smith, appeared ready to hold on until lunch, Sundar struck to dismiss Stokes just before the break.

With the game delicately poised, India continues to push for a series-levelling win as the rain-delayed match heads into its final hours.
