The NRL Integrity Unit has asked South Sydney for an explanation after Brandon Smith was stopped and questioned by police on arrival at Coolangatta ahead of Sundays game with the Gold Coast Titans.
Smith flew to the Gold Coast with the squad on Saturday afternoon and was met by officers on arrival at the airport. In a Sunday statement, Queensland Police said they had cause to speak to a 29 year old man at Coolangatta Airport and that he was later released without charge. They provided no further information.
South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly declined to comment. The Integrity Unit has been alerted and is seeking more information from the club.
Smiths New Zealand based agent Stan Martin could not be reached for comment. The 29-year-old is set to play his 150th NRL game on Sunday.
Former Rabbitohs and New Zealand hooker Issac Luke presented him with his jersey before the clash, a match that carries wooden spoon implications for both sides.
Smith is returning from a knee injury suffered in his first game for the club after his mid season move from the Roosters.
