Affordable Vegetables Fill Bags in Dhaka Market

2 min read

Currently, vegetable prices in Dhaka’s markets remain within reach for most shoppers, with only two or three items priced higher than usual. Although prices for out-of-season vegetables have seen some increases, the price of eggplants, which skyrocketed at the start of Ramadan, is now selling at 80 Taka.

A tour of various markets in the capital revealed the following prices:

  • Tomatoes: 20 Taka per kg
  • Ridge gourd: 50 Taka
  • Green beans: 40 to 50 Taka
  • Cucumbers: 60 Taka per kg
  • Bitter gourd: 80 to 100 Taka
  • Pointed gourd: 100 Taka
  • Eggplants: 80 Taka
  • Cauliflower: 40 Taka each

Additionally, papayas are priced at 40 Taka per kg, while lemons are sold in bunches for 40 to 60 Taka depending on quality, and raw bananas are available for 40 Taka per bunch.

Samad Khan, a private sector employee shopping at Shantinagar market, noted, “Compared to previous Ramadans, vegetable prices are still manageable. Aside from a few types, most vegetables are relatively affordable. However, the higher prices for certain items are due to them being out of season.”

Shoppers have observed that while some other products are priced higher, vegetable prices remain accessible for the general public.

Vendors echoed this sentiment, stating, “This year, vegetable prices are comparatively lower than in previous Ramadans. However, prices for okra and bitter gourd are relatively high due to being out of season.”

Overall, a sense of relief prevails among consumers in Dhaka’s vegetable market.
