A police constable was killed in a clash with BNP activists at Dainik Bangar intersection in the capital. After being injured in the clash on Saturday afternoon, he was rescued and brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Eyewitnesses said that a brick thrown by BNP activists hit the face of the deceased constable during the clash with the police at Dainik Bangla intersection on Saturday afternoon. He was seriously injured. Later colleagues rescued him and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. However, he is believed to have died before being taken to the hospital.
Earlier, BNP’s Nayapaltan grand meeting was halted at around 2.30 p.m. in the face of police obstruction. After being chased, the activists scattered around. Later BNP-Police-Awami League three-way clash took place at the Nayapaltan and Purana Paltan intersection and other nearby places. Many BNP leaders and activists as well as police and journalists were injured in these incidents. Police claimed that 41 of their members were injured.
A few weeks ago, BNP had called for a mass meeting program in Dhaka on October 28. The political arena was very hot for the last week. Awami League has called for a peace rally in the capital as a counter to BNP’s mass meeting. The rally at Baitul Mukarram South Gate continued till 4 p.m.
