Canada is mourning the loss of four service members after a devastating fire tore through a military base in Alberta, killing four soldiers and injuring dozens more in one of the country’s worst peacetime military tragedies.
Addressing the nation from Ottawa on Sunday, Prime Minister Mark Carney described the disaster as “one of the worst tragedies for the forces on Canadian soil in peacetime”. He paid tribute to the victims and expressed condolences to their families, saying the entire country was grieving alongside the armed forces.
The fire broke out at approximately 4:00pm local time on Saturday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of Canada’s busiest military training facilities. Emergency crews responded swiftly and successfully contained the blaze, though authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. Officials have stated that there is no indication the incident was linked to terrorist activity.
“The nation is in mourning for those brave members of our armed forces who we have lost,” Carney said during his national address. The victims have been identified as Sgt Morgan Wong, Pte Shaun Farrell, Pte Aidan Goulding and Pte Hayden Lykkemark.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across the country as Canadians honour the soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The fire also left dozens injured. A total of 39 people remain under medical care in hospital, with at least 19 reported to be in critical condition, according to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who provided an update during a press conference on Sunday evening.
Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly blaze as military officials work to support affected families and personnel. The tragedy has sent shockwaves across Canada, prompting an outpouring of national sympathy and renewed focus on the safety of military facilities and personnel.
