At least two people have been killed and six others injured following what Russian authorities described as a massive overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region, marking another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyev said Russian air defence systems intercepted 249 drones during the attack, with several incidents reported across the region. According to officials, residential buildings, private homes, and industrial facilities were damaged, while emergency services responded to multiple fires caused by falling debris and direct impacts.
Vorobyev said a 44-year-old woman was killed after a drone struck a three-storey residential building in Sofyino. Five people, including two children, were injured in the same incident. In a separate attack in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district, an elderly man died after a private house was reportedly hit by a drone.
Authorities also reported damage to infrastructure in and around the Russian capital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said a drone struck a building near one of the city’s major boulevards, while a facility at a Moscow oil refinery sustained damage.
The attacks caused disruptions to air travel, with temporary restrictions introduced at several Moscow airports. Sheremetyevo Airport warned passengers of operational limitations, while arrivals and departures at Vnukovo Airport were temporarily suspended as a precaution.
Videos circulating on social media appeared to show explosions in the night sky over the Moscow region and fires at affected facilities. Officials have not commented on the authenticity of the footage.
The latest strike comes amid an increase in long-range attacks by both Russia and Ukraine, with energy infrastructure, transportation networks, and logistics facilities increasingly becoming targets on both sides of the conflict.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported fatalities resulting from Russian attacks carried out on Saturday. In the Kyiv region, local authorities said a mother and her two young children were killed when a Russian strike hit the city of Fastiv, causing damage to private homes and residential areas.
In the northeastern Sumy region, officials reported that four people died after a Russian drone struck a vehicle in which they were travelling.
The exchange of attacks highlights the continuing intensity of the war, which began when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, both countries have increasingly relied on drones and long-range strikes as key components of their military operations.
As fighting continues, both sides have reported significant damage to civilian infrastructure and casualties, with authorities in Russia and Ukraine continuing to assess the impact of the latest attacks.
