Andrew and Tristan Tate have told a Florida court they should be released from jail so they can properly fight extradition to the UK, where they face rape and human‑trafficking charges.
Appearing in tan jail uniforms, the brothers insisted they did not commit the alleged crimes and criticised conditions in US custody. They were arrested in Miami on 19 July after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service announced dozens of new charges against them.
Government lawyers argued the pair are a flight risk, pointing to past statements in which they boasted about having multiple passports. Defence attorneys countered that the brothers’ global notoriety makes fleeing “almost impossible”.
US Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis will issue a written ruling later on whether the dual British‑US citizens will be granted bail.
During Thursday’s hearing, defence lawyers said the brothers had complied with release terms while previously contesting UK charges and a separate case in Romania. US authorities took them into custody last month after the CPS expanded its case.
British officials have until 16 September to submit a full extradition request.
