Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Calls for Wartime Elections, Challenging Zelensky’s Leadership

Former Ukrainian defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov has ignited the country’s most significant political debate since Russia’s full‑scale invasion, urging Ukraine to hold wartime elections despite martial law. In a video posted to YouTube, the 35‑year‑old declared that “democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia,” insisting Ukraine is fighting “precisely because we want to remain a free European state.”

Ukraine has suspended elections since February 2022 under martial law, a move widely supported at the start of the war but increasingly questioned as the conflict drags on. Fedorov’s call marks the boldest challenge yet to President Volodymyr Zelensky, though he did not mention the president by name.
Fedorov was unexpectedly dismissed in late July, just six months after taking office. His removal sparked nationwide protests, reflecting his popularity and reputation for energising the defence ministry, driving anti‑corruption reforms and using data‑driven analysis to improve frontline performance.
His firing is widely believed to have stemmed from tensions with then‑army commander‑in‑chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, who himself was replaced weeks later following sustained public pressure on Zelensky. The president has not responded to Fedorov’s video, leaving the political establishment bracing for a debate over whether democracy can or should function during an existential war.
As Ukraine continues to fight for survival, Fedorov’s message has opened a new front: the battle over how a nation at war defines democratic legitimacy.
