Police have arrested a 19‑year‑old man found hiding inside a dormitory closet at Virginia State University (VSU) following an overnight shooting that left five people wounded, including one victim in critical condition. Please confirm all law‑enforcement information with a trusted source.
Authorities identified the suspect as Camron Harris of Henrico, Virginia. Police say Harris is not a VSU student, and neither were four of the five people injured. The victims, aged 17 to 23, included one 20‑year‑old student who has since been released from hospital. Officials have not released the victims’ names.
Police have not disclosed a possible motive. Harris is facing eight felony warrants, including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. It remains unclear whether he has legal representation.
The shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday near the university’s Quad Annexes, prompting an immediate campus lockdown as students prepared for the new academic year. Campus police and Chesterfield County officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside dormitories.
Earlier in the day, the university said authorities were searching for multiple suspects, though police have not provided further updates on that search. Officials lifted the lockdown after determining there was no ongoing threat to the campus community.
Residence halls reopened only a week ago, and classes are set to begin Monday. Many students had just completed VSU’s “New Trojans Experience” orientation program.
“We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community,” the university said in a statement. “The safety and well‑being of our students remain our highest priority.”
A heavy law‑enforcement presence remained on campus throughout Saturday morning, and students were advised to monitor email updates for additional safety guidance and support services.
