A Russian naval vessel conducted a live‑fire weapons exercise in international waters south of Plymouth, prompting close monitoring by the British Navy during a tense 30‑minute drill. The British defence ministry said the ship, positioned about 40 miles (74 km) off the English coast on Monday, notified the patrol vessel HMS Tyne of its intention to fire and requested it move to a safer distance.
British media identified the vessel as the Neustrashimy, a frigate from Russia’s Baltic Fleet, noting the timing coincided with the first day in office of Britain’s new prime minister. The Royal Navy continued to track the ship closely after the exercise, which took place entirely in international waters.
The incident follows a similar confrontation in June, when a Russian warship fired warning shots at a yacht in the English Channel. Moscow said the yacht was on a dangerous course, and the UK defence ministry agreed the action was taken to prevent a possible collision.
The latest drill adds to a growing pattern of assertive Russian naval activity near British waters, raising concerns about maritime safety and geopolitical signalling at a moment of heightened global tension.
