A deadly exchange of fire between Russia and Ukraine overnight has left nine people dead, underscoring the escalating intensity of the conflict just hours before Ukraine’s allies gather in Paris to discuss new ways to pressure Moscow into ending its four‑year war.
Russian forces unleashed a wave of drones and missiles, killing four people across Ukraine. Three died in the Dnipropetrovsk region, including two struck at an industrial site in Kryvyi Rih, while a separate drone attack killed a 48‑year‑old man in Kherson, according to local officials.
Ukraine responded with strikes of its own. Four people were killed in the Russian‑occupied Zaporizhzhia region, and a long‑range Ukrainian drone attack claimed another life in Russia’s Samara region, authorities said.
The violence comes amid stalled diplomatic efforts. Washington’s focus has shifted toward its conflict with Iran, leaving US‑led negotiations over Ukraine at a standstill. Meanwhile, Moscow has intensified its ballistic missile campaign, killing dozens since July and placing immense strain on Ukraine’s air‑defence systems.
In a significant move, the United States has granted Ukraine permission to build US‑designed Patriot air‑defence systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. But production could take months time Ukraine does not have as Russian strikes grow more frequent and more lethal.
As leaders prepare to meet in Paris, the overnight attacks serve as a stark reminder of a war that shows no sign of slowing.
