Harvest Rock Festival Announces 2026 Hiatus as Industry Pressures Mount

2 min read

Adelaide’s Harvest Rock festival will not go ahead in 2026, marking the second time the event has taken a year off amid growing instability in Australia’s live‑music sector. The two‑day festival has been a key tourism driver for South Australia, and despite thunderstorms disrupting the opening day of last year’s edition, Harvest Rock 2025 was widely regarded as a major success.

The South Australian Tourism Commission said more than 30 per cent of ticket holders travelled from interstate to see a lineup featuring The Strokes, Jelly Roll, Royel Otis and The War On Drugs.

The hiatus follows a pattern of cancellations by promoter Secret Sounds, which pulled the plug on Harvest Rock 2024 just months after cancelling its flagship winter festival Splendour in the Grass, still yet to return. Another long‑running Secret Sounds event, Falls Festival, has also been absent since announcing a break after the 2022/23 editions.

In a brief statement today, organisers offered no explanation for the postponement, saying only that “good things take time” and hinting that future plans are already in motion.

The pause comes as Australia’s festival landscape faces mounting financial pressure. Industry studies show just over half of Australian music festivals are profitable, with rising operational costs and declining attendance among younger audiences contributing to the collapse of major events including Groovin the Moo, Bluesfest and Big Red Bash. At the same time, demand for smaller boutique festivals continues to grow.
