The United Firefighters Union (UFU) has failed in its attempt to stop the public release of a major anti‑corruption investigation into its dealings with the former Victorian government led by Daniel Andrews. The Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday dismissed the union’s bid for judicial review, clearing the way for the Independent Broad‑based Anti‑corruption Commission (IBAC) to publish its long‑delayed report.
Operation Richmond examined allegations of corrupt conduct during the heated 2016 enterprise bargaining dispute involving the UFU, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the Andrews government. The probe began in 2018 and concluded in 2022, but its findings have remained under wraps due to the union’s legal challenge.
The investigation is understood to have included interviews with Andrews and senior ministers, though IBAC’s laws prevent witnesses from confirming whether they were questioned.
On Friday, Justice Claire Harris rejected arguments put forward by the UFU and its secretary Peter Marshall, dismissing their case and removing the final barrier to the report’s release.
IBAC is now expected to move toward publication once remaining procedural steps are completed.
