Police in Iowa City are investigating a shooting that left “multiple” people injured early Sunday near the University of Iowa, after the campus issued an emergency alert warning of gunfire in a busy nightlife area. Officers said several victims were taken to nearby hospitals, though their conditions remain unknown.

According to the Iowa City Police Department, officers were responding to reports of a “large fight” just before 2am when they arrived and “heard gunfire.” No arrests have been made, and authorities have not released details about potential suspects.

The University of Iowa confirmed there were “confirmed victims” and urged students and residents to avoid the area and remain vigilant. The gunshots were reported near College and Clinton streets, a central hub in the college town.

The United States continues to grapple with frequent gun violence on school and university campuses. In February, two people were killed at South Carolina State University, and in December, a gunman opened fire inside a classroom at Brown University, killing two and injuring nine others.

As police continue their investigation in Iowa City, officials are urging anyone with information or footage from the scene to come forward.
