A devastating accident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport has left two pilots dead and 41 people injured after an Air Canada aircraft collided with a fire service truck on the runway late Sunday night. The crash occurred at 11:58pm local time as the plane was landing, striking the emergency vehicle that had been positioned on the runway while responding to a separate incident.
The impact severely damaged the front section of the aircraft. Both the pilot and co‑pilot were killed instantly, while all 39 passengers on board and two fire service personnel on the ground sustained injuries. Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals within minutes of the collision.
Airport authorities said the fire truck had been stationed on the runway as part of an active emergency response when the Air Canada flight touched down. The aircraft made direct contact with the vehicle, triggering a catastrophic collision that brought operations to a halt.
LaGuardia Airport will remain closed until Monday as investigators work to determine how such a critical lapse occurred and what measures are needed to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Federal aviation officials are expected to examine communication logs, runway clearance protocols and emergency response procedures as part of the investigation.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the aviation community, raising urgent questions about runway safety and coordination during emergency operations.
