Victoria’s CFA Funding Sparks Political Clash as Minister Rejects Opposition Claims

1 min read

The Victorian Opposition has intensified its scrutiny of the government over funding for the Country Fire Authority, commissioning the Parliamentary Budget Office to analyse financial support dating back to 2020-21.

The PBO report confirmed that grant funding dropped from 351.6 million dollars in 2020-21 to 339.5 million dollars in 2023-24. However, it also noted that grants represent only part of the CFA’s overall funding structure.

Emergency Services Minister Vicki Ward pushed back strongly during a radio interview, accusing the Opposition of stirring unnecessary controversy. She said the government continues to invest in the CFA each year and provides additional resources based on operational needs.

Ward added that the sector’s funding model is complex and deserves a more informed and respectful discussion.
