Russia has claimed to have seized control of Pokrovsk, a strategically important city in eastern Ukraine, in what would mark one of its most significant military gains if confirmed. The announcement was made from Moscow on Monday.
Ukraine, however, has denied the claim, saying Russia is spreading such information to influence ongoing peace talks. The city has long been at the center of intense fighting, with heavy casualties reported on both sides. Pokrovsk has become a symbol of the bloody struggle between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
Just hours before Russia’s announcement, senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials met in Florida to discuss prospects for ending the war. Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation chief, Andrii Kovalenko, suggested that such claims may be part of Russia’s strategy to shape perceptions on the battlefield and weaken Western resolve in the coming weeks.
