A woman is in police custody after essential medical gas supplies were deliberately cut at two hospitals in Sydney, an act the state’s health minister has described as “sabotage.”
NSW Police allege the woman entered Sutherland Hospital in Caringbah around 12:20am, where she cut both the water and gas mains before turning on fire hoses. About an hour later, she allegedly entered a nearby private hospital on the same street and switched off its gas supply.
Health Minister Ryan Park confirmed that Sutherland Hospital was forced to rely on portable oxygen and air as part of its emergency response. He stressed that no patients were harmed and services were restored within two hours by the Southern Sydney Local Health District.
Just before 4am, police arrested a 42-year-old woman in Miranda for an alleged breach of bail. She was taken to Sutherland Police Station for questioning. Authorities were later alerted to the incidents at the hospitals.
Minister Park said the woman had accessed a restricted area of Sutherland Hospital to cut off medical gases vital for patients with serious conditions. He added that NSW Health will review the incident to determine whether additional safeguards are needed.
“Access to gas systems in NSW public hospitals is restricted,” Park said. “We will review the incident to see what improvements can be implemented.”
Police have not confirmed whether the woman has any connection to the hospitals. No charges have yet been laid.
