Global Protests Erupt After Israel Blocks Gaza Aid Flotilla

1 min read

Protesters across the world rallied Thursday against Israel’s interception of a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza, demanding tougher sanctions in response.

Demonstrations took place from Europe to Australia and South America after the Global Sumud Flotilla which departed Barcelona last month to challenge Israel’s blockade was stopped by the Israeli navy. The United Nations has reported famine conditions in Gaza after nearly two years of war.

According to Israeli officials, 41 ships with more than 400 people on board, including politicians and climate activist Greta Thunberg, were prevented from reaching the coastal enclave beginning Wednesday.

In Barcelona, municipal police estimated around 15,000 people marched through the city, chanting “Gaza, you are not alone,” “Boycott Israel,” and “Freedom for Palestine.”

Spanish public television broadcast images of riot police using truncheons to push back protesters who attempted to climb over barriers, forcing them to retreat.
