Romania Scrambles Jets After Drone Breaches Airspace

1 min read

Romania’s air force scrambled F‑16 fighter jets on Saturday after a drone entered its airspace during a wave of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border.

Defence Minister Ionut Mosteanu confirmed that the aircraft were deployed from the Fetesti Air Base shortly after radar detected the drone crossing into Romanian territory. “Our pilots were prepared to neutralise the threat,” he said, adding that the drone exited towards Ukraine before any engagement took place.

The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions, with NATO members bordering Ukraine increasingly on alert for spillover from the war. Since 2023, Romania has reported multiple cases of Russian drone debris landing on its soil, prompting protests to Moscow and calls for stronger air defences.
