Police have detained a 19-year-old man in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash near Newcastle that resulted in the death of a woman and her unborn child.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning when a police patrol spotted a sedan with allegedly unauthorized number plates driving along Newcastle Road in North Lambton around 2.40am. Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but it continued driving dangerously. Due to safety concerns, police decided not to pursue the car.

Shortly afterward, another police vehicle saw the sedan cross onto the wrong side of the road before losing sight of it. Officers continued monitoring the area until they responded to reports of a head-on collision involving the sedan and another vehicle.

A 55-year-old woman, a passenger in the second vehicle, died at the scene. The driver, a 28-year-old woman, was seriously injured and taken to John Hunter Hospital. She is pregnant and has since lost her unborn child.

The driver of the sedan and the front passenger allegedly fled the scene before police arrived. Meanwhile, two rear-seat passengers, girls aged 15 and 17, were hospitalized in serious condition and remain at John Hunter Hospital.

Police arrested the 19-year-old suspect at a residence in Mayfield just after 3pm today.
