In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, Australian authorities have seized assets valued at more than $4.5 million, including a waterfront mansion, a luxury car, and digital cryptocurrency holdings. The operation led law enforcement to a Queensland man who was previously convicted of hacking into a U.S.-based gaming company.
The assets were confiscated by the Australian Federal Police-led Criminal Assets Confiscation Taskforce (CACT) after being identified as suspected proceeds of crime linked to cryptocurrency theft and cyber hacking schemes. This successful operation marks a major milestone in efforts to disrupt cybercriminal networks engaged in illegal digital activities.
The seizure marks the conclusion of Operation Gouldian, which was initiated following a tip-off from law enforcement agencies in Luxembourg to AUSTRAC in 2018 about suspicious Bitcoin transactions. The case underscores the increasing international cooperation and persistent efforts of authorities worldwide to combat cybercrime and recover illicit gains from digital platforms.
